Baron is Windsmith City’s biggest super hero, but more importantly… He’s not there. So when Horice starts to enact his plan, nobody is around to notice.
Except Baron’s side-kick, August.
Just returning from Argentina, August has no clue who Horice is or what his plan might be. But when he sees signs that Windsmith City might be in trouble, he decides to do what any good side-kick would do: watch and call for help if things get really bad! Soon August’s spying reveals that Horice is a strange and twisted man, but one question remains…
What is Horice Pickle’s horrible plan?
I’ve sent Horice Pickle to a for-hire editing group. It’s not as ideal as a normal editor/author setup, but I’m hoping for a couple of things:
Useful feedback on the plot structure.
A perspective on whether I should continue with my plan to do indy publishing.
A more experienced person’s opinion on the commercial viability of the book.
Direction on what to fix, if anything.
Unfortunately the turn around is going to be about two months. In the mean time, I’m contemplating NaNoWriMo.
As far as the podcast, I am going to keep in on hold until other things finish up (namely, the play I’m involved in and our buying a new house). Perhaps by then I’ll have something back from the editor.
I started out using an “expensive” thirty dollar mic from Best Buy. I sat at my desk in our work room and read in to it as clearly as I could. The result was… well, if you’ve listened to the first four episodes, then you’ve heard for yourself.
I knew this wasn’t going to cut it, so I used a bonus from work to buy an H2 digital recorder. The possibilities suddenly opened up and, when I could spare some time from tending our new baby, I would record little snippets in various locations, trying to find one that will work well for me. The requirements were pretty steep I admit: I needed somewhere that was quiet, filled with lots of soft things, was comfortable, had power outlets, and was accessible at any time. Well, steep requirements netted me zero results.
This week I tried something which we had seen while watching Dirty Jobs. Apparently, the host records his narration in their hotel room wherever they happen to be. There’s no recording studio or fancy setup, just Mike, a computer, a mic, and a blanket. He puts the blanket over his head and records. It looked like a great idea, so I gave it a shot. And?
It worked great. The quality was astonishing. But there were drawbacks:
It was incredibly hot until the blanket, even with the AC turned on.
I couldn’t move, or the blanket would make noise.
If I took a break or opened the blanket for air, the shape of the blanket changed and this affected the recording.
It was clumsy, especially with a flimsy laptop monitor.
But, oh the quality! It was nice. So I’m going to pursue this method a little bit more, maybe with the addition of a few chairs to make myself a Recording Tent of Amazement. Even though it may be a little less amazing than I want.
I was a little tired after pushing to get Episode 5 online yesterday, so I decided to wait to post any news.
And what news? Well, Episode 5 is online! I’m not 100% happy with it, but I have to admit the quality is significantly improved over previous episodes. It took a little bit to re-learn everything for my podcast pipeline, but it wasn’t hard to pick back up again.
I’m leaning even more towards the idea of recording the whole book and putting up pieces on a more regular schedule. The upfront time commitment is huge and it’ll be hard to work that out, but after everything I had to struggle with to get Episode 5 up, I think it’s the best way to go.
In which we learn that Horice is planning something devious and August is gearing up for his final bid to become Horice’s minion.
So apparently my wife has been handing out fliers for the podcast without my knowledge (hello, Tekko people!). I don’t mind that she was doing this, even though she was doing it before I decided to continue with said podcast! Oh well.
All the more impetus to start recording again, and to that end I’ve set aside time tomorrow to do a few tests with my new microphone and re-familiarize myself with the whole “making a podcast” process.
